2017 Senior To Do List

Dear Seniors and Parents/Guardians,

The senior year for the Class of 2017 is quickly approaching and as the College and Career Counselor I am writing to give you a “To Do List” for August so that you can relax more during the rest of the school year.

1. Develop a resume to submit to colleges/business owners/scholarship committees so you have it ready whenever you need it throughout the coming year. Ask at least three adults to be your references.

2. Take anything off of your social media accounts that may cause colleges/businesses/military branches to question your character. This includes the picture you have on your Google email account and any quotes on your signature line. Remember that many the military/colleges/businesses have people on staff who look at both your private and public media accounts to make sure you will not misrepresent them.

3. If you have not already done so, begin comparing your college/career options so you have something lined up when you graduate.  Comparisons include discussing financial aid options with your families.

4. Start applying to your top college choices (at least three). (Students often get dorm choices according to how early they applied.) Also apply for as many scholarships as possible.

5. Make appointments for college campus visits and get the excused form from the MHS Attendance or Counseling Offices. Make note of visit days posted on college websites and check your school calendar. You are limited to only three excused absences for college visits during the school year; so plan to visit local colleges on days when school is not in session and visit out-of-town colleges when you can be excused. (If the college does not have a specific visit day that works for you, be sure to make a tour appointment with the admissions office to get the most out of your visit.)

6. Fill out a transcript request form. To have your transcript sent to colleges, the military, or scholarship organizations you must fill out the blue transcript form (which must be signed by a parent/guardian to release your records). The forms are in the counseling office at the top of the burgundy spinning shelves. Once you have filled out the form and returned it to the registrar (Ms. Hauser), it is good for the entire year. The first time you send your transcript it is free, any additional transcripts require a $2 fee.

7. Utilize your Missouri Connections account to do career searches, resumes, college comparisons, etc.

8. If you need to retake the ACT or SAT, sign up online now for the fall tests. (Remember that if you are on free/reduced lunch there are fee waivers available from Mrs. Raney (467-6108) in the counseling office.)

9. Make sure you are signed up to take all the classes you need, not only to graduate from MHS but also to be admitted to your chosen colleges/business internships. Email Mrs. Hellwig if you have any concerns.

10. Utilize our counseling website for information. We have links to most everything you need to prepare for your future plans.  I recommend you check it every other weekend for updates (especially the scholarships page). You can go to the mhs.mehlvilleschooldistrict.com website and select Counseling Center on the left. Also follow us on Twitter @MHS_Counseling

Dr. Swanger also wanted me to remind you that “All students entering 12th Grade are now required to have a Meningococcal (MCV4) booster vaccine if their first dose was administered prior to 16 years of age.” So get that taken care of if you have not done so and bring verification documentation with you the first day of school.

I am so excited for you and will do whatever I can to assist you in making a smooth transition from high school to your post-secondary plans.  My best advice is to not procrastinate and get as much of this “To Do List” done while you have plenty of time to think things through.  The more you do now, the less stressful things will be once school begins. So be proactive and enjoy the rest of your summer.

See you soon,
Mrs. Beth Neighbors
